Build Healthier Habits this Year
After a difficult year, it’s even more exciting than usual to think of 2021 as your fresh start. Your clean slate. A time to set goals for yourself that feel good!

After a difficult year, it’s even more exciting than usual to think of 2021 as your fresh start. Your clean slate. A time to set goals for yourself that feel good!

While we are big on goal setting here, it’s also important to set yourself up for success in the New Year. What do we mean by that? The truth is, when most of us set New Years resolutions, we forget about them by mid February. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and bogged down as “real life” sets in and our goals start to fall to the wayside.

That’s why we like to focus on shifting small habits, daily, instead of big goals right up front. Here’s why:

When we focus on building small, manageable, daily habit changes into our routines, it makes it easier to build up to our loftier goals.

For example, perhaps your first goal is to get into the best shape of your life. The old you may have decided to sign up for 7 classes in a row while also diving deep into a challenging diet. Talk about burnout! Instead, start small. If you typically wake up 15 minutes before your first Zoom call, try setting your alarm 30 minutes earlier so that you have time to drink some extra water in the morning and start a 10 minute meditation practice. Practice that for a week or two and then add in another step like a healthy full fat breakfast or a quick 10 minute workout. Now you’re a few steps closer to your big goal and chances are, you won’t burn out in 3 weeks. Continue to add one small habit every week or two as you in closer to where you want to be.

Goal achievement is made up of tiny habits and adjustments that we make daily. They may seem small, but they add up quickly! Our advice this New Year is to set your goals and then work backwards to create habits and steps that will get you there.

Cheers to a happy and healthy 2021!
